The reason I wrote “ Nation Heal Thyself “ was to fight against the market driven health care where greedy corporations and corrupt government agencies allow soaring costs and toxic remedies to affect us while ignoring our more sensible needs like health education and effective governance.
Through capitalism and competition, we have created the world’s best healthcare achievements and yet we rank amongst the sickest. Remember we are a nation that politicized and profited off tobacco while deceiving and destroying people while ignoring our own health needs. But, alas, years later we made those companies pay and admit to deceptive marketing practices.
However, I am often reminded of an image when I was a young practitioner where doctors in their most profitable years are overweight, with a cigarette in their mouth while doling out their advice. This is the very same image I get when I think of a Pharmaceutical CEO or a government fat cat who puts profits over health.
Companies are targeting consumers with misleading ads that is heavy on the cure and light on the toxic sides effects with little or no information on what causes the disease nor how to prevent it whiles leaving it to the primary care doctors to take care of any health problems that may arise.
In this country with our current healthcare crisis, we have become so desperate that some felt that deadly violence against a healthcare executive in New York was actually forgivable or even acceptable. The sad part is that this murderer used this very healthcare system to have what I consider miraculous back surgery that may have left him with permanent pain but obviously with enough function and mobility to carry out his dirty deeds.
